Valleyview Community Amenities & Features:

The communities within this region include Crestwood, Laurier Heights, Parkview, Glenora, and River Valley Capitol Hill. This area is one of the older Edmonton suburbs, and was initially settled in the early 1900's as downtown expansion spread to accommodate the growing populations and economic enterprises. With the Saskatchewan River marking a natural boundary between Edmonton city center and the Valleyview suburb, this residential section is able to enjoy a safe peacefulness of natural spaces, while only being a bridge away from urban attractions.

As an older section of Edmonton, Valleyview displays a reverence for the frontier and expansion history that is a part of its legacy. Major attractions such as Buena Vista Park, MacKinnon Ravine Park, and Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park give residents easy access to preservation lands and kilometers of wilderness trails. These spots are also ideal for riverside activities, and the parks have boat ramps, fishing spots, and grilling facilities near trailheads and rest areas.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is another draw to the Valleyview region. Along with exotic animal exhibits, the zoo also houses native wildlife and is the site of a heritage center that celebrates the history of the land, pre- and post-colonization.

Although the residential potential for Valleyview was explored and expanded from the mid 1900's into the present, settlements for trade and resources existed as early as the late 1700's. This area started as a trading post that was further west than old Fort Edmonton, and trade with local tribes was established. After the destruction of Fort Edmonton, the Valleyview area concerted to more agricultural pursuits, although the discovery of gold and the western expansion created a need for rest areas, business facilities, and residences.

The rich history of this suburb is also reflected in the diverse population that resides in the area. A strong mix of families, students at nearby University of Alberta, and single professionals make up the major demographics for Valleyview. The incorporation of natural lands into this city locale also make the section attractive to commuters who would prefer to live in safer and quieter neighborhoods with easy access to city center amenities.

Although major thoroughfares connect into Edmonton across the Saskatchewan River, allowing for an easy drive into the city, many residents take advantage of the public transportation system that serves Valleyview. City bus stops are throughout this suburb, with routes that travel into Edmonton and surrounding communities. Pedestrian and bicycle access are also popular modes of transportation, and in an effort to maintain the natural beauty of the regions, these avenues are well tended and safe for concourse.

The rich history of Valley view is also reflected in residential pride for the area. Highly active community leagues endeavor to build neighborhood culture and also to improve quality of life and living amenities for inhabitants of all ages.
