St. Albert History

St.Albert's roots trace back 150 years to 1861 when it was founded by Father Albert Lacombe. He built a chapel that still stands today on the north hill of the river and is accessible to visitors from June to September. Father Lacombe built the log chapel to administer to the Métis (people of mixed French and Indian origin), who made up the majority of the settlers and the Cree people.

St. Albert was incorporated as a village in 1899, as a town in 1904 and officially as a city in 1977. Today, the city is home to 66,082 residents and consists of 20 neighbourhoods including, Sturgeon Heights, Erin Ridge, Erin Ridge North, Forest Lawn, Grandin, Heritage Lakes, Inglewood, Jensen Lakes, Kingswood, Lacombe Park, Mission, Akinsdale, Braeside, Deer Ridge, Downtown, North Ridge, Oakmont, Pineview, Riverside and Woodlands.

St. Albert’s boundaries are defined by Anthony Henday Drive to the south, Range Road 261 to the west, Township Road to the north and Veness Road to the east.
