Sherwood Park History

Sherwood Park was established by John Hook Campbell and John Mitchell as Campbelltown in 1953 after the Strathcona Municipal Council approved their plan to construct a bedroom community east of Edmonton. In 1956, the name Campbelltown was changed to Sherwood Park since other communities in Canada already carried the same name.

On January 1, 1996, Strathcona County was incorporated as a specialized municipality by the Province of Alberta, making it eligible to receive grants and other provincial benefits available to both urban and rural municipalities.

Sherwood Park is bordered by Edmonton to the west, Wye Road to the south, Yellowhead Highway to the north and Highway 21 to the east.
