Sherwood Park History
Sherwood Park was established by John Hook Campbell and John Mitchell as Campbelltown in 1953 after the Strathcona Municipal Council approved their plan to construct a bedroom community east of Edmonton. In 1956, the name Campbelltown was changed to Sherwood Park since other communities in Canada already carried the same name.
On January 1, 1996, Strathcona County was incorporated as a specialized municipality by the Province of Alberta, making it eligible to receive grants and other provincial benefits available to both urban and rural municipalities.
Sherwood Park is bordered by Edmonton to the west, Wye Road to the south, Yellowhead Highway to the north and Highway 21 to the east.

Sherwood Park Trails & Park
Sherwood Park is part of the regional trail system along the North Saskatchewan River Valley. The trails in Strathcona County are 22 km long and start in Strathcona Science Provincial Park and stretch to Fort Saskatchewan. They provide access to the river, beautiful flowers, wildlife, birds and spectacular views of the cityscape. Those who want a more challenging and fun experience can explore the entire 88 km-regional trail which connects Devon to Sturgeon County.
Aside from the trails, the Strathcona Science Provincial Park offers more to explore including, biking, walking and running paths by the river, a mountain biking course, and a nice view of the sunset and surrounding landscape.
Broadmoor Lake Park is one of the favourite places for many people in Sherwood Park. It features 3 km of asphalt trails, benches and picnic areas overlooking the lake, a playground, spray park, 3 sand volleyball courts, 2 sports fields, handball court, shale running track, edible gardens and a skating park during winter. It also features The Broadmoor Lake Loop, a 1.6 km looping lake trail that offers a chance to explore the birds and other wildlife in the area.
The lake park is also home to several annual events. These include Canada Day Celebrations, New Year's Eve Celebrations, Celebration of Lights, "Everybody Gets to Play" Play Day's and Sherwood Park Farmers Market (May through October).
The Sherwood Park Natural Area is a nice getaway for those who want to be close to nature. The 68-hectare park features wetlands, mature poplar forests, white spruce, birch trees and wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, red squirrels, etc. and many bird species. The park also features the Old Edmonton Trail, a heritage site that features plaques used to mark the old trail route.
A few minutes to the east along Township Road 530, Strathcona Wilderness Centre is home to many outdoor adventure activities that can keep you busy when you decide to escape from the bustle of the city. Activities on offer include groomed trails, wildlife watching, outdoor fitness equipment, cross country skiing and camping. Nearby places you can visit while you're there include Beaver Hills Biodiversity Trail, Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, Elk Island National Park and the Cooking Lake Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area.

Millennium Place caters to fitness enthusiasts and residents who want to have fun with friends and family. The facility features a fitness centre and fitness studios, aquatics centre, an indoor track, a gymnasium, twin arenas, leisure ice, field house, indoor playground, youth lounge and concession.
Swimming enthusiasts in Sherwood Park frequent the Emerald Hills Leisure Centre, which features a 6-lane 25-meter lap pool, 4-lane 25 meters warm pool with adjustable depth, children's teach pool, whirlpool, steam room and changing facilities.
Broadmoor Arena is a recently renovated facility that features a new zamboni & ice plant room, upgraded refrigeration system, dressing room & rink boards. Sherwood Park Arena and Sports Centre is home to the city's hockey squad, the Sherwood Park Crusaders, who play in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The centre features twin arenas, eight dressing rooms, a lobby area with concession and two meeting rooms.

Broadmoor Golf course is located in the heart of Sherwood Park between Sherwood Drive and Broadmoor Blvd. It features fairways and greens in great shape and a driving range. The place is a great for a family and group getaways as they offer golfing lessons for everyone. They also have various golf leagues including Broadmoor Junior League, Day Ladies, Business Ladies, Men's Club and Senior Men's Club.

The museum can be explored by bike, car or foot and features landmarks from the county's history including, Lord Strathcona, Ottewell homestead, 1920 Smeltzer House Centre for the Arts and Culture, Monument Park, etc.
