The north end of Old Riverbend is where the Hudson Bay Company created its stronghold on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in the late 1700's. This was done to establish trading rights throughout the area and to maintain hold over the commerce heading into western Canada. In the early 1800's the fort was initially destroyed due to heavy flooding and was soon rebuilt on slightly higher grounds.
In the early 1900's Edmonton had established its capitol inland and to the east, and Old Fort Edmonton fell into disrepair. The structure was dismantled, but the thriving communities of Old Riverbend had already been established with the influx of trade.
