Mayfield Community Amenities & Features:

More recently, the movement trend of raising families and living in the suburbs while still working in the city has increased revitalization efforts and formed a structured and well kept residential and business region.

Mayfield consists of several neighborhoods, which include the conglomerate of Britannia Youngstown, as well as Canora, Grovernor, High Park, and the community of Mayfield. Situated within six kilometers of central Edmonton, the suburb has good city access while still remaining self contained.

This area is extremely popular with families and has a well established school system, including both private and public educational options. Some of the institutions for the region include Youngstown Elementary School, Britannia School, and West End Montessori School. CDI College also has a campus here, which promotes adult and continuing education.

Mayfield was initially agriculturally based, but became more industrial through the 1940's. This trend still continues with a large manufacture, fabrication, and business section to the north of the suburb. Residents of Mayfield are as likely to work closer to home as they are to work in the city, and local industries include printing, retail, shipping, and construction.

Recreations for the area range from outdoor activities to exhibits and events. Nearby Coronation Park is a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and sporting activities. It is also the location of TELUS World of Science which has interactive learning displays and games, as well as an IMAX theatre for entertainment. The Royal Alberta Museum is also just to the east, and McKinnon Ravine Park provides wilderness trails.

The development of Mayfield saw some of its strongest progress between the1930's and the 1950's. The area became officially named in 1954, just prior to incorporation, and takes its moniker after Wiflrid R. "Wop" May. May was an aviator who fought in World War I and later went on to found the Northern Alberta Aero Club. May is also responsible for creating the initial flight services into Edmonton.

As a strongly established region with good community roots, Mayfield has seen more recent popularity as a place to live. The suburb has a largely family oriented population, with a number of single professionals and older residents as well. This makes for well rounded communities which are highly integrated and active in local affairs.

Community leagues throughout Mayfield play a large part in the structure and development of the neighborhoods. Along with organizing events, these leagues also encourage volunteer work and hold fundraiser for the betterment of the area. This includes the formation of more parks and public access lands, as well as facilities for fitness and recreation.

The inclusive mentality of Mayfield makes it a welcoming place to live. Proximity to the city and to abutting industrial areas also give residents a choice for a variety of employment opportunities. The suburban layout is conducive to a safe and familiar environment.
