Castledowns Community Amenities & Features:
This is also in response to a growing trend of families and professionals who prefer to commute from more secluded and rural locations, in order to have better proximity with nature and outdoor recreation areas.
The entire Castledowns region is a part of a municipal plan that includes the neighborhoods of Baturyn, Beaumaris, Canossa, Chambery, Dunluce, Elsinore, Lorelei, and Rapperswill. The original land annexation and approval of the plan occurred in the early 1970's, although slower construction periods and amendments to the structuring and zoning of the areas has led to construction phases as recently as the present decade. Many of the amendments included the addition of shopping centres and retail outlets, as well as more educational facilities within individual communities. Ongoing expansion is still expected to follow the original visioning for the area.
Prior to municipal annexation, the lands that make up the Castledowns area were primarily private agricultural holdings. As industry shifted strongly in the 1970's to a more fuel based economy that included oil drilling, coal mining, and the exportation of these resources, the focus on farming became less present. As demand for property grew, the purchase was able to take place in one step.
A large aspect of the original plan is also the need to incorporate old and new forest growth within residential and commercial sections. Much of Castledowns has been constructed with this ecological sensibility in mind. This also led to the structure design of communities that could rely on better pedestrian and cycling travel, as well as the use of public transportation. This generated some of the more unique features of the Castledowns area, including non-roadway trails, the incorporation of existing environmental factors such as lakes and forest lands, and smaller commercial zones that had greater residential access. A comprehensive system of bus lines is also in place for the area.
This parts of the development of Castledowns also make the individual communities very family friendly. While ongoing amendments are including a greater presence for educational facilities, many institutes already in place. Some of the schools within the Castledowns area include the Baturyn School, the Dunluce School, Bishop Savaryn Catholic School, The Mary Butterworth School, and St. Lucy's Elementary School.
For shopping, the Castledowns Village is a burgeoning commercial area that is still in keeping with the small town feel of these communities. Other smaller commercial areas not only serve the residents with provisions, but also offer local employment within retail, services, and financial industries. Much of the recreation for Castledowns is local to the community, this outdoor lands for sporting and for gatherings. The Castledowns Recreational Centre is a popular attraction as well, as it offer youth league programs and facilities for the community to enjoy leisure time.
