Capilano Community Amenities & Features:

The Capilano suburb had already been established in the 1950's but the project was undertaken with the intent to create a more amenable, safe, and transit friendly area for living and recreation.

Much of the Capilano area received a substantial overhaul during the construction period. This included repaving roads and walkways, upgrading streetlights for better illumination and safer travel, and designing activity and community areas that incorporate park lands and natural space into the cityscape.

With the redesign of the Capilano area, many residential areas were also upgraded to provide new homes and better living quarters for existing and incoming residents. The communities within Capilano include the neighborhood of Capilano, as well as Forest Heights, Fulton Place, Gold Bar, and Terrace Heights. Each of these areas have unique attributes which make them attractive to the diverse population of the region.

The neighborhoods in this area consist mainly of detached dwellings, and offer a comfortable suburban feel for the residents. The majority of people in this area are families with children, but a large number of single professionals also occupy this neighborhood which has close access to the city centre. With large parks and proximity to preserve lands, Capilano offers a natural environment within the greater urban structure.

This effort to incorporate natural features and modern amenities is a tribute to the namesake for the area. The name Capilano arises from a Salish word that refers to a Chief who once oversaw the region, and environmental preservation gives tribute to the heritage of respecting the land. This area was mostly agricultural land that had a sparse population in the early 1900's, and became an annex of Edmonton in the 1950's. Since that time, Capilano has experienced much development and change, and this recent project has generated a successful use of natural resources to benefit community prosperity.

Capilano Park is one of the biggest attractions in the area, for both residents and visitors. It offers access to the North Saskatchewan River Valley and provides a site for hiking, camping, and picnics. Improvements to modern services include the addition of a mall and a regional shopping center, as well as the formation of community leagues which promote neighborhood culture.

This family friendly area has experienced considerable growth over the past ten years, and the renewal project has sparked greater interest for living in Capilano. More than a 30% rise in residence has been experienced in the last year alone, as people are finding the safe and vibrant community to be an attractive dwelling location.

People in the Capilano area come from a variety of backgrounds, and this contributes to the eclectic feel of the community. This also offers residents a greater amount of cultural exposure and leisure pursuits that may be experienced within the developed parts of this region. Along with the attraction of natural beauty, Capilano offers arts and entertainment in the form of community events and festivals.
